What are you doing Wednesday night?

February 19, 2007

May I suggest you attend the next meeting of the Irondequoit Public Library Board of Trustees? If you are interested in how things get done at the library you owe it to yourself to attend one of our board meetings and see the wheels of library administration turning. Have a look at the Library Board’s web page which is now under construction. It includes minutes from previous meetings and information about your library trustees. Just like the Town Board we have a public forum at the beginning of the meeting so you may ask questions or state your views on any library related issues. If you wish to speak at the public forum please call the Evans Branch at 336-6062 and sign up. The Board of Trustees meets at 7 pm at the Evans Branch, 45 Cooper Rd, on the third Wednesday of each month except for November and December when they meet on the 2nd Wednesday. We’d be delighted to see you at the next meeting!

Welcome to The Open Book

February 13, 2007

Hello. My name is Terry Buford. I am the director of the Irondequoit Public Library in Rochester, New York. Welcome to my blog, The Open Book.

Every day The Irondequoit Public Library delivers on its mission to serve the informational, educational and recreational needs of our community. Our friendly, professional staff provides residents of all ages with the opportunity to enrich and improve their lives with the best cultural, artistic and literary resources available. We work with parents to develop well rounded adults. We offer help in navigating our increasingly complex and technological world. We empower people through access to timely and accurate information.

Somebody once said that if you do what you love you’ll never work a day in your life. I guess I could say that about myself because I love my job. Who wouldn’t like doing this? Yet even people who love their jobs have frustrations. My biggest frustration is trying to get the message out about the value your public library delivers. The main goal of The Open Book is to communicate all the ways the Irondequoit Public Library makes our community a better place. In addition to library talk I will also occasionally cover issues relating to information and telecommunications and the growing role they play in our lives. I’ll also throw in some cool websites, book and media recommendations, guest posts from our talented, hard working staff and all things Irondequoit. If you know me you know we’ll have some plain old silliness and fun too.

The Open Book gives you all a chance to respond to what you see. Other visitors can see your comments and respond as well. Who knows? Maybe we’ll get a conversation going! In The Open Book I’ll tell you what I think. Just click where you see the word “Comments” and please do the same. I hope you will read The Open Book regularly, enjoy your visits, leave behind thoughtful comments and return often.
